When people think of places listed in the National Registry of Historic Places, they think of old houses and buildings. Residents of Stillwater think of their entire city, which is one of only a few towns in the country featured on the list. Visiting Stillwater is like taking a journey back in time while still having all the modern conveniences easily accessible. The city is not an island of antiquity, however, and is well connected to the metro area along several highways. Located twenty miles east of downtown St. Paul, Stillwater is close enough to the conveniences of a major metropolitan area while being far enough away to remain relatively quiet.

History

The St. Croix River Valley where Stillwater is located has been a well-known area with recorded events dating back to the early 1600s. Due to its location along the river, the area was populated by both the Ojibwa and Dakota tribes who used the river as a source of life and transportation. Ownership and control over the land changed hands in the 1800s after several treaties were signed selling the land to the United States. The area was opened up for settlement and people started coming to the area almost immediately.
A town rapidly sprung up along the banks of the St. Croix River and eventually came to be known as Stillwater. This ideal location along the river served as a backdrop for the birthplace of the state. In 1848, Stillwater was the site of the Minnesota Territorial convention that officially put ‘Minnesota’ on the map. The city of Stillwater has gone through a lot of changes and modernization over the years, but it is still its well preserved character that is remembered by most people.

Historic Village Area

The city is known for its buildings that show the era of Victorian finery and turn of the century charm. Situated in the wooded hills of the St. Croix River Valley, Stillwater is a hidden treasure that time forgot. Thousands enjoy visiting Stillwater and the St. Croix Valley each year to tour the historic downtown district where Minnesota was born, famous outlaws were imprisoned, and fortunes were made in the lumber and milling business. Built in the mid-1800s by the lumber barons, the homes and downtown area are still well preserved today. Many of them are open to the public and some even serve as bed and breakfast inns. The town is filled with boutique and antique shops not to mention restaurants of many ethnic backgrounds and styles. Stillwater has so much to discover that many visitors make a weekend of it.

Parks and Recreation

There are over 222 acres of publicly accessible parkland in the city of Stillwater, many of which are in the heart of the city along the riverfront. Lowell Park is one of those riverfront parks complete with a gazebo for events like weddings, and a picnic area. Pioneer Park is also located downtown on the riverfront and features a band shell. People who visit these parks for the first time often have a sense of déjà vu because they have been featured in numerous photographs and several major motion pictures. The beauty of the parks is enhanced by their riverfront location and view of the historic Stillwater Lift Bridge.

Schools

Stillwater School District #834 might be located in a city known for its historic character, but the schools are anything but old-fashioned. The district is well known for having schools filled with the latest technology and teachers who know how to use it. Students and teachers in the 10 elementary schools, two junior high schools, and Stillwater High School utilize this technology to maintain their reputation as one of the top performing districts in the state.
