St. Louis Park is a community that has grown from a village of 45 families to a thriving first-ring suburb. Located in Hennepin County, west of Minneapolis, St. Louis Park is the gateway to Linden Hills and the Minneapolis City Lakes Area. St. Louis Park is close to downtown Minneapolis, the airport, two major malls and the Minneapolis lakes area. Residential areas comprise the largest portion of the community. St. Louis Park offers a full range of housing from affordable starter homes to expansive executive homes. The community is home to retail stores, restaurants, medical facilities, family owned businesses, corporations, churches and synagogues. St. Louis Park has a sound economic base with commercial, industrial and apartments comprising more than 60 percent of the tax base. Commercial uses comprise 13.8 percent of the community’s land area.
History
St. Louis Park was almost called “Elmwood” but the city’s founders chose to name the city after the St. Louis and Minneapolis railroad because they hoped the railroad would help transform the village into a major trade center. With that in mind, 31 people signed a petition in 1886 asking the county to incorporate the Village of St. Louis Park. In 1899, St. Louis Park became the home to the world's first concrete, tubular grain elevator and provided an alternative to combustible wooden elevators. Despite the nickname of

The residents speak highly of the community. In a random opinion survey conducted in 2000, 95 percent reported that they would recommend St. Louis Park to other people, and 95 percent said they feel welcomed in the community. Truly a very special place to live, St. Louis Park is close to everything with lots of antique shops, many churches and synagogues, shops of every description and excellent schools and parks. Highway 100 could be called St. Louis Park’s main street. The city has many older homes with “Old World Charm” woodwork and lake views, giving it an atmosphere of the country within visual sight of Minneapolis. St. Louis Park is truly a wonderful family-oriented suburb in which to live.
Parks and Recreation
St. Louis Park has used 11.5 percent of its land to create 51 parks for its residents to enjoy. Ball diamonds, soccer fields, hockey rinks (outdoor and indoor) and award-winning youth and adult recreational programs abound. Bike trails link St. Louis Park to downtown Minneapolis, the Uptown area, Hopkins and Chaska. Residents of all ages can participate in year-round recreational and educational activities offered by the city and school district.
