Driving through Shoreview on Interstate 694 one cannot help but notice the three massive broadcast towers that are actually the tallest structures in Minnesota. Shoreview residents enjoy the benefits of a well-preserved natural environment while at the same time living in close proximity to the entire metropolitan area. A suburb of St. Paul, ten miles northwest of the downtown area, Shoreview has a reputation for being one of the best places to live in the metro. The city covers an area of approximately thirteen square miles and features a wide variety of housing, business and recreational opportunities. Major transportation routes such as Interstate 694 and 35W provide easy access for residents commuting to jobs throughout the metropolitan area.

History

Dakota and Ojibway Indians once inhabited the area that is now Shoreview. Remnants of prior civilizations have been found in Indian mounds containing human bone fragments, arrowheads, pieces of pottery, and bits of charcoal on Rice Creek near the north shore of Long Lake in New Brighton. In February 1850, Socrates A. Thompson, accompanied by an Indian friend, left St. Paul in search of a good location for farming. Thompson was the first white person to settle on land that is now within the boundaries of the City of Shoreview. Soon people from Switzerland, England, Ireland, Germany, Vermont, Virginia, Illinois and New York began farming here. At one time Shoreview was part of Mounds View Township. Later in the 1800s railroad lines expanded to include Shoreview. The first railroad lines in Shoreview, owned by "Soo Lines", were built in the 1880s. Shoreview wasn't officially incorporated as a village until 1957 and became an official city in 1974.

Indoor Water Park

The Tropics Indoor Water Park is known by many as the best indoor water park in the metro area. Featuring a 210-foot twisting waterslide, a smaller drop slide, and beat boat slide, not to mention lots of swimming area, the 70,000 square foot community center is a complete water park. The city offers a wide variety of swimming and lifeguard instructor courses, which is appropriate for a city with the name Shoreview. Tropics is located inside the Shoreview Community Center which also features whirlpool, cardiovascular and strength training facilities, basketball and volleyball courts and an indoor walking/running track. The community center also houses City Hall and a Ramsey County Library making it a social, recreational, and cultural gathering place for the community.

Parks and Recreation

An important aspect of Shoreview's high quality of life is the abundance of passive and active recreational areas. Residents enjoy nine parks, numerous lakes, quiet open-space areas, and an extensive trail system. Shoreview is a leader in providing recreational and trail opportunities and in the protection of our environment through wetland and lake protection policies.

Schools

Two school districts serve the community: Mounds View School District 621 and Roseville School District 623. Combined these two districts provide fourteen elementary schools, three middle schools, and four high schools.
