The city of St. Paul is more than just a common answer to a Minnesota trivia question, it is a vibrant city with strong neighborhoods, a high quality of life, and outstanding business opportunities. In recent years, the city has gone through a renewal complete with a new Science Museum and the Excel Energy Center. This renewal continues as the city rediscovers its expansive riverfront area. Residents have long known that St. Paul is a great city, but these improvements have allowed the rest of the metro a chance to see it first hand.

History

Before St. Paul became the capital in 1847, it was a hub for lumber and fur trading. Visitors marvel at Saint Paul's Old World charm and the way modern ideas have been added without taking away the charm. Saint Paul's Summit Avenue boasts one of the longest stretches of constant Victorian architecture in the United States. Downtown Saint Paul features a number of historic buildings including the State Capitol, the Fitzgerald Theater, the Landmark Center, the Saint Paul Hotel and breathtaking views of the Mississippi River. Saint Paul's Old World Charm is borne into modern design of the new Science Museum of Minnesota, the Xcel Energy Center (home of the Minnesota Wild) and Harriet Island Regional Park. The city has many annual celebrations including: Taste of Minnesota, Festival of Nations, Grand Old Day, Minnesota State Fair, St. Patrick Day Parades, St. Paul Winter Carnival, Art Crawl and many more.

Entertainment

Saint Paul offers a variety of choices to suit any diner's appetite. Featuring American and International cuisine, the restaurants are sure to please any palate. Choose a downtown location for an urban experience, or venture out to a diverse neighborhood establishment on Grand Avenue, West Seventh Street or in District Del Sol. There is a vibrant array of cultural institutions such as the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, the Minnesota Children's Museum, the Northstar Opera and the Minnesota History Center. Enjoy a show in one of Saint Paul's many movie or fine arts theaters.

Minnesota State Capitol Building

The State Capitol Building is one of famed architect Cass Gilbert's most prominent and most beautiful buildings, containing monumental arches, columns and statues. Cass Gilbert also designed our nation's Capitol Building and the similarities are noticeable. Guided tours of the capitol are offered every hour on the hour for no charge.

Parks and Recreation

Saint Paul is more than just old and new buildings, it is also a city full of parks with a wide variety of activities for folks of all ages. There are over 160 parks throughout the city, 41 recreation centers, three 18-hole golf courses, 24 bicycle and pedestrian paths, an indoor pool, two outdoor pools, a public beach and sports facilities. One of the most well-known city parks is Como Park which features a public zoo, acres of picnic land, a lake, and the Conservatory. Hundreds of couples are married each year at the Conservatory and hundreds of thousands visit the park for many other uses each year.

Schools

The Saint Paul Public School District #625 is the second largest in the state and provides all the challenges and opportunities found in an urban district. With a total of 54 elementary schools, nine middle schools, and seven high schools, the Saint Paul Public Schools have a lot of different programs designed for students looking for more than just reading, writing and arithmetic. There is a focus on those basic skills, of course, but the Saint Paul schools provide unique programs in areas like language immersion, International Baccalaureate, performing and liberal arts magnets and business magnets.
