Located in the rapidly expanding "northwest corridor" of the Twin Cities, the city of Maple Grove is one of the state's fastest growing and dynamic cities. Located only 20 miles from downtown Minneapolis, Maple Grove offers a healthy mix of suburban and rural living. The city is large, covering almost 36 square miles. This size has proven to be very manageable and the city has an excellent image and reputation in terms of comprehensive land use planning. Acres of park land and trail systems are available for the enjoyment of Maple Grove residents and others.
History
Until Louis Gervais arrived and established a settlement in 1851, the American Indian tribe known as the Winnebago dominated the area. More people poured into the area filling it up with farms, homes, and churches. By 1880, the population soared to 1,155 but then remained stable for the next 70 years. A town hall was built in 1855, but Maple Grove did not become a statutory city until 1974. The first schoolhouse was built around 1860 and some of the early schoolhouses are still around today remodeled as private homes. The last 50 years has seen the population soar from almost 2,000 in 1950 to almost 60,000 today.
Maple Grove Arboretum
Initiated in 1985, the Maple Grove Arboretum provides the public with aesthetic and educational opportunities to view a wide variety of plants and trees. Visitors can enjoy the large collection of plants and then utilize the picnic area for full immersion in the outdoors. The Arboretum is located by Elm Creek on Fernbrook Lake and County Road 30. Visitors can also see the Angel of Hope statue located in the arboretum. Dedicated in 2001, the statue site was made to be a place of hope and healing for anyone who has suffered the loss of a child.
Parks and Recreation
With over 40 developed parks in the city, Maple Grove has a more than adequate supply of recreational opportunities. There are four large regional parks run by the Three Rivers Park District in the Maple Grove area. All of these parks offer year-round recreational opportunities. The city also features seven lakes that offer tremendous fishing and other water recreation activities.
Schools
The children of Maple Grove are served by three area school districts: Osseo Independent School District 279, Wayzata Independent School District 284 and Rockford Independent School District 883. Each district is known for having high-performing students and highly-qualified teachers.
