Inver Grove Heights is in close proximity to the Mississippi River Valley, which provides a beautiful natural setting and year-round recreational activities. Lakes, ponds and wetlands cover many areas of the city. Residents have a wide choice of housing, ranging from apartments to large-lot estates. The city is only 15 minutes from the airport, minutes from many recreational opportunities and shopping. From the unique and diverse history, to the values and quality of life that make it home to thousands today, Inver Grove Heights is a particularly good choice when looking for a home, a business opportunity, or place to explore.

History

In 1852, pioneers staked claims in an area known as Inver Grove. Attracted by the area's rolling green hills and the close proximity to the Mississippi River, these settlers from Ireland and Germany quickly established a community. Those of Irish descent clustered their farms along what is now Rich Valley Boulevard. Settlers from Germany laid claim to the wooded farmland in the northwest portion of the community, clearing and cultivating fields around the areas lakes. Other settlers from France and England built homes along the Mississippi River. By April of 1858, the Township of Inver Grove Heights was incorporated and the first Board of Supervisors was elected. From 1858 until 1880, hundreds of settlers were attracted to the township that was named after an Irish fishing village, "Inver" and commemorating the homeland of the German settlers, "Grove". By 1880, 240 farms, and four school districts had been established. As commercial and industrial expansion took place in the late 1880's, people living in the one square mile adjacent to the railroad separated themselves from the surrounding area by incorporating as the Village of Inver Grove in 1909. The two entities existed side by side for more than 56 years. In that time, farmland changed hands infrequently.

A Growing Community

Today, Inver Grove Heights' boundaries expand over 30 square miles of rolling wooded terrain that provides for an engaging mix of residential dwellings and commercial facilities. In addition, the schools, park facilities, community center and golf course are among the Twin Cities best. There has been a significant amount of commercial development recently, with the arrival of several restaurants, hotels, and a 16-screen movie theater all within an area adjacent to Highway 52. Dining and Entertainment options are endless within the city and surrounding communities.

Parks and Recreation

The city is home to several parks and recreational areas including the skate park, Inver Wood Golf Course, Rich Valley Athletic Complex, Veterans Memorial and the Grove Community Center. The Rich Valley Athletic Complex is a premier, fully irrigated outdoor athletic facility consisting of baseball, softball and soccer fields. Veterans Memorial and The Grove Community Center houses an aquatics and fitness center complete with water slides, wading areas, a lap pool and diving well, a fitness center with a free-weight area, strength-training and cardio equipment, and an indoor running/walking track.

School

Children living in Inver Grove Heights are served by Independent School Districts #199 (Inver Grove Heights) and #196. District #196 encompasses all or part of nine communities in the southeastern metro area and is one of the largest districts in the state. Both districts are known for producing high-qualified students from schools with excellent access to technology. District #199 has four elementary schools, one middle school and Simley High School. District #196 has 18 elementary schools, six middle schools and four high schools. There is also an area learning center and the school for environmental schools, otherwise known as the "Zoo School."
