An almost ideal combination of conditions has made Blaine one of the largest and most popular suburbs of the Twin Cities. Located only 13 miles north of downtown Minneapolis, Blaine has an effective transportation system, beautiful scenery and a wide array of businesses. These features have helped attract many of the almost 50,000 residents to the city. Blaine is nestled in the south-central region of Anoka County with a small portion resting in Ramsey County.

History

The community was organized as a township in 1877 and was named after a Republican politician from Maine, James G. Blaine, who ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Presidency three times. When many of the cities in Anoka County were first being settled, Blaine's sandy and marshy soil discouraged would-be farmers, and so it remained a prime hunting area. Blaine's first resident was an Irishman, Philip Laddy, who settled near the lake named after him. The community's most aggressive growth period came during the 1960s as the population soared threefold from 7,000 to over 20,000. The city was officially incorporated in 1964.

National Sports Center

Many of the visitors to Blaine each year come to the national Sports Center. Over three million people annually visit the NSC. It has 52 regulation size soccer fields, a 13,000-seat stadium, a cycling velodrome and indoor track. The NSC is a valuable sports facility unmatched anywhere in the country. Major international tournaments are held at the NSC each year including the USA cup, which is the world's fourth largest youth soccer tournament. Soccer players from all over the world converge to the NSC each year for the many tournaments.

Parks and Recreation

Blaine also contains numerous parks covering over 510 acres and in addition has over 4,400 acres of wetlands. One of the specialties of the Blaine Parks and Recreation department is utilizing all of these resources throughout the year to provide a multitude of activities for residents of all ages.

Schools

Blaine is served by three school districts all of which are known for high quality educational opportunities and programs. The Anoka-Hennepin School District 11 serves residents living along the northern and western portions of the city. Centennial School District 12 serves residents in the southeastern corner and Spring Lake Park School District 16 serves the central portion of the city.
